A model dropdown is not model freedom.

Friday’s Owner stays on last week’s shelf. We do not reprint it. A new week starts. Overnight the letters shifted from who signs when the machine works to what you thought you owned that was only rented. OpenAI is cutting Cursor from its models, with a November 12 wind-down that includes future models such as Astra. Kilo argues a model dropdown is not model freedom. Every republishes that the agent is a model pointed at a folder: forty-four of them. Perplexity ships Hybrid Compute so the cloud can reason while the Mac keeps the secrets. Dominion and PJM’s public record on about 3869 MW of data-center load transfer still cannot show what controlled the fleet.

What you thought you owned was rented. Model access. Portable context. The folders you refuse to paste. Saturday is the lease.

You learn what freedom means the day the pipe closes.

The Owner asked for a name on the door. The Lease asks whether the door was ever yours.

The Cut

A model dropdown is not model freedom. You learn that the day you are forced to switch.

OpenAI confirmed it is cutting Cursor off from its models entirely. Developers have until November 12. The wind-down includes future models, Astra among them. Anaconda acquired Kilo in July. Engineers Anil and Caitlyn moved from Cursor to Kilo before the breakup went public. The letter is not a scoreboard. It is a lease notice with a date on it.

Cursor bundles usage in a flat fee. Cost stays opaque until the bill or the limit. Kilo bills per token and shows the session cost. Both read ~/.agents/skills. Cloud agents worked identically. Kilo as a VS Code extension gets marketplace support a Cursor fork does not fully support. .cursor/rules needed a manual carry: ask Cursor what to keep, ask Kilo to turn it into a rule. Composer was missed. An Auto-Efficient router stood in, with visible model and cost.

A model dropdown is not model freedom.

Portable rules. Portable context. Transparent pricing. You learn what freedom means the day you are forced to switch.

The Folder

More agents did not make him faster. The directory did.

Kieran Klaassen tried agent swarms. More agents did not make him faster. The human stayed the bottleneck evaluating ten results. The realization: a project folder with CLAUDE.md or AGENT.md, skills, and compound-engineering context is the agent. He is running forty-four folder-agents. Same model, different folder, different specialist: ~/cora/ for Rails, ~/cora-agent/ for ops.

The dispatch layer is a Ruby daemon with file-based messaging, a /hey morning briefing, and an /orchestrate kickoff. You cannot vibe-orchestrate. Build, use, trust, then hand the work to dispatch. Anthropic’s multi-agent research, as cited: an Opus lead with Sonnet subs gained about 90 percent on research tasks and burned about 15× the tokens. Paywalled and upsell comparisons sit behind the wall. We label them unread. We stick to the free letter.

The folder is the agent.

Specialize the directory before you swarm. The lease on a seat is not the same as a folder you can move.

06  ·  The Machine

The Gate

Cloud for hard reasoning. Local for the files you will not paste.

Hybrid Compute on Perplexity Computer: one task across two models. Cloud handles search, planning, citations, and hard reasoning. Local on the Mac handles private files and sensitive data. A Privacy Gate, the PII-Tracer classifier, runs on-device before any cloud call. It can mask, keep local, refuse, or ask. Local models at launch: Gemma 4 E4B, Qwen3.6 35B-A3B, and a Perplexity post-trained model.

Hardware: Apple silicon, macOS 15 or newer, 24 GB minimum, 32 GB recommended. Hybrid is paid (Pro, Max, Enterprise). The free trial covers Computer, not Hybrid. The local half burns zero cloud credits. Adoption stalls at the folder you refuse to paste.

Mask before cloud. Keep the secrets on the machine that owns them.

The lease is not only the model seat. It is every file you have already uploaded because the pipe made pasting feel free.

07  ·  The Grid

The Blind

The largest load transfer in PJM history. Still no public hand on the fleet.

Free portion only. Dominion identified millisecond and timer risk. From 1 October 2025, ride-through interconnection requirements for qualifying large loads. On 22 July 2026 in Loudoun County, a fault near Roundtable: about 3869 MW of Dominion-zone transfer, the largest PJM load transfer in its history as the letter states. ACE restored in nine minutes. Transferred demand returned in about thirty. The public record does not join each configuration’s obligation to event-time settings, or who commanded departure and return.

Past events named: 10 July 2024 (1551 MW) and 17 February 2025 (1800 plus 544 MW). Thesis: the same campus megawatts can be firm demand, emergency flexibility, and an auto-disappear contingency at once. The paywalled “five links,” Ireland material, and calendar sit unread. We do not invent them.

Same campus. Three leases at once.

A grid that cannot see the cloud is another kind of rented seat: power without a named hand.

Four rules for this issue

  1. I

    Assume the pipe can close.

Portable skills, rules, and context beat a proprietary seat. OpenAI’s Cursor cut has a November 12 date. A dropdown that can empty overnight is not ownership.

  2. II

Price every session you can see.

Opaque credits hide the lease. Flat-fee bundles keep cost dark until the bill or the limit. Per-token with a visible session cost is the clearer receipt.

  3. III

Treat the folder as the agent.

Specialize the directory before you swarm. Same model, different folder, different specialist. Build, use, trust, then hand to dispatch. Do not vibe-orchestrate.

  4. IV

Keep the secrets on the machine that owns them.

Mask before cloud. Do not paste the folder you refuse to paste. Hybrid’s Privacy Gate is the pattern: local for private files, cloud for hard reasoning, zero cloud credits burned by the local half.
